Did you ever suppose you’d rejoice 20 years if you first launched your line?
“I don’t think I could have ever imagined that the Jessica Simpson Collection would turn 20 and have grown to be as wide reaching as it is. When we first launched fragrance, I was simply creating something that felt true to me, which is the way we have organically grown the collection since our early days. We now have more than 50 categories…we started with a cowboy boot and are about to launch furniture! Every category excites me, but I really do love working on fragrance. Certain fragrances can instantly shift my mood, transport me back in time, or spark inspiration and confidence. To know that people have connected with our scents for almost two decades, and that they’ve become part of their own core memories, is a powerful and romantically universal feeling of a collaborative celebration.”
What’s your most favourite a part of the perfume course of?
“The storytelling. Fragrance tells a story beyond words, the way music can, it connects straight to emotions. Every scent we make starts with a mood or a memory, and we build from there. Each note could remind me of a summer night in Texas, the thrill of a new love or the confidence of a victory. Translating those feelings into scent is such an intuitive, creative process. I love turning meaningful life moments into something people can carry with them.”
Relating to finalizing a scent, what’s most tough?
“It is the high note—making sure it is not too overwhelming. The hardest part for me is not focusing on any specific detail. Fragrance is really personal and it is more a gut instinct than a cerebral one. I have to allow myself to let go and sink into the alchemy of the feeling rather than analyzing it.”
What’s your most favourite a part of this new perfume and what does the title imply?
“Mystic Canyon feels deeply personal to me, it’s a reflection of where I am now, as a woman, a mother and an artist. The name speaks to connection, honesty and coming home to yourself. This scent carries both warmth and strength. It is soft and rich but also grounded.”
This perfume guarantees to be “part of your roots.” Why is that necessary to you and the way do you honor your historical past immediately?
“My roots are everything to me. When I wrote my memoir, Open Book, I really discovered how much power there is and how much growth there can be in being honest with yourself about where you come from. I’m so proud of who I am and a huge piece of me is the values I was raised with and the people who have impacted me along the way. I honor my roots in everything I do, but mostly in being true to myself and my purpose. There is no more important reflection of where I have been than to be 100 percent the woman I am becoming.”
